It is separated from the Kalahari desert by mountains and hills up to 8000 feet high. Like the Atacama desert of South America, the Namib desert is an arid coastal strip with its main source of moisture coming from fog. The Benguela current runs up the coast from Antarctica, and reduces the rainfall in this area to as little as an inch a year. However, precipitation from fog can also reach over an inch a year.
